Programme Overview


This programme provides students with a strong foundation in English Language and Literature. The English Language courses equip students with an in-depth understanding of linguistic concepts, discourse and the sociocultural contexts within which the language functions, especially in Singapore. The English Literature courses introduce students to a range of literary genres, periods and styles, and teach students to critically analyse texts using key concepts and theories.

In addition to the standard admission criteria for all Singapore University of Social Sciences​ undergraduate programmes, applicants need to meet the following requirements:
  • At least a Grade B4 in English Language in the GCE 'O' Level Examination, or  
  • At least a Grade B4 in GCE 'A' Level General Paper (English), or
  • At least a Grade B4 in English Paper 121, 1120 or 1119 at SPM, or  
  • At least a Grade 4 in English (for IB Diploma holders)


Note:
Applicants who do not hold these qualifications may submit an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.​
​Basic Programme
Students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu) to graduate with a basic degree, inclusive of 10cu of university core courses.
 
The breakdown of the cu to be completed is:
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature core courses;
  • 80 cu of English electives, including 30cu at Level 3 (15cu Language + 15cu Literature); and
  • 10 cu of University core courses.
 
​Basic + Honours Option Programme
This programme has an honours option. Students who achieve a CGPA of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree will be invited to enroll in the Honours programme. To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu) of courses, inclusive of 10 cu of university core courses. A total of 170 cu is required to graduate with honours, inclusive of 10 cu of university core courses.
 
The breakdown of the cu to be completed is:
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature core courses;
  • 110 cu of English electives, including 60cu at Level 3 (25cu Language + 25cu Literature + 10 cu Language or Literature); 
  • 10 cu Capstone research project in English Language or Literature; and
  • 10 cu of University core courses.​
