Programme Overview

BA English Language and Literature / BA English Language and Literature​ with Minor

This programme combines the disciplines of language studies and literature. The linguistics courses will deepen your understanding of the language system and broaden your perspective on language use and discourse in society. The literature courses introduce you to a range of literary genres, periods and styles, and teach you to critically analyse texts using key concepts and theories. 

You may pursue English as a single subject or in combination with a Minor.

In addition to the standard admission criteria for all Singapore University of Social Sciences undergraduate programmes, applicants need to meet the following requirements:
  • At least a Grade B4 in English Language in the GCE 'O' Level Examination, or 
  • At least a Grade B4 in GCE 'AO' Level General Paper (English), or 
  • At least a Grade B4 in English Paper 121, 1120 or 1119 at SPM, or 
  • At least a C in Literature in English/English Language and Linguistics/Knowledge and Inquiry in GCE ‘A’ level/H2 level or 
  • At least a Grade C in H1 General Paper, or 
  • At least a Grade 4 in English (for IB Diploma holders) or 
  • A CAP of 3.0 in English Language for NUS High School Diploma.

​IELTS 6.5 and above or a TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based) or 85 (internet-based) would be considered as a substitute of the required English Language entry requirement.
BA English Language and Literature
Students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu), inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS core courses  
The breakdown of the cu to be completed is: 
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature Core courses; 
  • 80 cu of English Electives, including 30 cu at Level 3 (15 cu Language + 15 cu Literature); and •
  • 10 cu of SUSS Core courses. 

BA (Hons) English Language and Literature
This programme has an honours option. Students who achieve a CGPA of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree will be invited to enrol in the Honours programme. A total of 170 cu is required to graduate with honours, inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS core courses. 

The breakdown of the cu to be completed is: 
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature Core courses; 
  • 110 cu of English Electives, including 60 cu at Level 3 (25 cu Language + 25 cu Literature + 10 cu Language or Literature); 
  • 10 cu Capstone research project in English Language or Literature; and
  • 10 cu of SUSS Core courses. 

BA English Language and Literature​ with Minor
Students pursuing the basic Major-Minor programmes are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include: 
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature Core courses;
  • 40 cu of English electives, including 30 cu at Level 3 (15 cu Language + 15 cu Literature);
  • 40 cu of Minor courses; and 
  • 10 cu of SUSS Core courses. 

BA (Hons) English Language and Literature​ with Minor
For those pursuing the Honours Major-Minor programmes they are required to complete 170 credit units (cu), which include: 
  • 40 cu of English Language and Literature Core courses; 
  • 70 cu of English electives, including 60 cu at Level 3 (25 cu Language + 25 cu Literature+ 10 cu Language or Literature); 
  • 40 cu of Minor courses​
  • 10 cu Capstone research project in English Language or Literature; and 
  • 10 cu of SUSS Core courses.
